Reflection Paragraph
Heading into my senior project I was very reluctant and nervous about what may lie ahead. Many past students had explained the tremendous amount of effort put into their projects and I was nervous that I would not be able to do as well. I had already struggled with finding a topic as there were many ideas in the mental health field that I had been interested in, however some were too broad, others too narrow. But after meeting with Sr.Fayzeh and explaining to her my dilemma she proposed the idea of social anxiety among adolescents, specifically school aged children. I Immediately loved the idea and grew excited to learn more about social anxiety and dove into deep research regarding its effects on young children in a new school setting.
To my advantage, there was a lot of research regarding this subject which made the process of writing a 8-10 paper manageable. However, with the advantage of many resources came the problem of which were the best and most credible. My mentor, Sr.Naseera, helped a lot in this area and guided me to many beneficial resources that gave me very accurate information. Through my research I learned a lot about social anxiety, and learned a lot about various ways to treat it. The most interesting to me was how Islam tied into it. Reading about the Prophet and Quranic ayahs talk about bullying and being kind to one another really showed me how Islam can be tied with anything and interested me a lot.
As I mentioned, I was very nervous going into this senior project as I underestimated myself greatly. However, I was pleased to learn that if I put all of my effort and power into something I could get it done and well. Writing the paper was the most nerve racking part going into it as my writing skills are not the highest, however I was very pleased to see my progress and receive encouraging feedback from Mrs.Sebik and Sr.Naseera. This has helped me excel in other classes and I know will do so for the remainder of my academic career.
I want my project to continue to live on, even after I leave MIA and graduate. I am hopeful that clubs at MIA such as Peer to Peer will continue addressing social anxiety and work towards making our school a welcoming and “homey” environment to all incoming students.
Looking back on my experience I wish I would have put more effort into my product rather than focusing mainly on my paper as I believe I could have completed a more developed product. To any incoming senior and to all the future seniors, I would advise them to pick a topic as soon as they can and to not stress the class too much. The work does get done and to focus on their product/event more than their paper, as they have many chances to fix it through peer reviews and various drafts, but they only have one product.
If I was to grade myself, I would give myself around a 90/A. I do believe I put my all into the project and am very proud of the paper I wrote along with my website and other classwork assignments, however I believe that my product could have been better. I had a limited amount of time to present due to the “Greenhills” administration and class time I was given, however I feel that I could have done something to possibly present more than once or to various classrooms.
